The materials used for this piece were collected during a trip to Teotihuacán, the city of the gods, in Mexico. In the ritual act of climbing a mountain, I was able to collect dry cactus wood and feathers. Walking outdoors in solitude allowed me to discern between the really valuable things of being alive. The open field, the sun warming my body, the clean air, the earth under my feet and the clear sky, contrasting with my daily reality of living in Mexico City. Compiling the materials and experiences during the quarantine was the inspiration material, the argument is of course, the mourning. TLAOCOLCUICATL is a tribute to all those who died with this pandemic; to the life that we all lost, to the relationships that did not survive. It is for me the possibility of crystallizing the pain, sadness and pain of this year in a brooch that rests on my chest to alleviate this loss.
